SpaceX has propelled itself to the forefront of private-market valuations, authorizing a secondary share sale that places the company at nearly $800 billion, according to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg. The move signals towards a possible initial public offering (IPO) in 2026.

In a letter to shareholders, company’s Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen outlined plans for the company and select investors to buy and sell up to $2.56 billion in shares at $421 each, a pricing structure that implies the near-$800 billion valuation. While the company is preparing for a potential IPO, it cautioned that the timing, pricing, and overall execution remain uncertain.

According to the shareholder letter, the company aims to use the capital to ramp Starship’s flight rate, deploy artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in space, build Moonbase Alpha and send missions to Mars.

Analysts note that if an IPO proceeds, it could raise over $25 billion, potentially elevating SpaceX’s market value well above the current private estimate. In July 2025, SpaceX sold shares at $212 apiece, giving the company a $400 billion valuation. The latest valuation would rank SpaceX among the world’s top 20 publicly traded companies and solidify its position as the most valuable private startup, surpassing OpenAI’s recent $500 billion valuation.

SpaceX remains privately held, and the valuation from this insider share sale reflects the pricing expectations of private investors rather than a public market consensus. The company continues to rank among the world’s most valuable private startups, with Elon Musk, founder and CEO, hinting at the possibility of an IPO on social media, though no formal regulatory filings have been made.

Market watchers emphasize that broader economic conditions and investor appetite will heavily influence the success of any public listing. Should the IPO achieve a valuation above current private estimates, it could become one of the largest public offerings in history, drawing considerable attention from global investors.
