World Powers Warns Afghan Taliban Over Terror Links

The International Community has issued a strong warning to the Afghan Taliban during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, criticising the regime for failing to implement effective counter terrorism measures and allowing militant groups to operate from Afghanistan.

Several countries told the Council that terrorist organizations, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda, remain active in Afghanistan and are carrying out attacks across the region. Delegates warned that continued inaction by the Afghan government poses a serious threat to regional and international peace.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar, told the Security Council that terrorist attacks against Pakistan from Afghan territory have increased significantly. He blamed the surge on ineffective Taliban actions, stating that attacks are planned, monitored, and financially supported from within Afghanistan.

Pakistan restated that it has already shared undeniable evidence with the international community showing Afghani soil being used repeatedly for attacks against its territory. Diplomats warned that lasting peace in the region will remain elusive unless terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan are dispersed.

China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, cautioned that terrorist groups based in Afghanistan are involved in attacks on neighboring countries, stressing the need for urgent and concrete action.

Denmark also expressed serious concern, urging decisive measures to eliminate terrorism initiating from Afghanistan and threatening the region.

The United States called on the Taliban regime to honour their counter terrorism commitments, warning that there has been little to no progress on promises made to the international community.

Panama raised concerns over violent incidents involving the TTP and other militant groups, whilst Iran emphasized that Afghan territory must not be used for terrorism or violence against neighboring states.

The UNSC discussions underscored growing international frustration, with multiple countries urging that the Afghan Taliban’s continued support for militant groups and security failures is pushing regional stability further at risk.
